It is virtually impossible, which is why most operating systems ask at least once "are you sure you want to shut down?"

The shut down or restart process immediately begins terminating not only visible running programs but also essential processes in the background. If the procedure was aborted, the operating system would be unstable because things it expected to be available - even minor processes - would have closed. This would cause even basic operations to fail.

In Windows select Start > Shutdown. Depending on which version of Windows, the previous could be correct OR You would need to click on Turn Off Computer in addition to what's mentioned previously.

In Apple, select Apple > Shutdown.

In Linux, type "init 0" from a terminal. The other option = Pressing Ctrl, Alt & Delete together, where it will cause a dialog box to appear. From here, clicking on the Shutdown button will shut down the computer.

If those don't work:

1. Hold down the power button for 10 seconds.

2. Unplug the power cord.

3. Removing the CMOS battery, might or might not restart or shutdown the computer. At least the computer won't be able to function correctly until you put it back either with the original or a new one. Be very careful, sometimes doing this might hurt the BIOS or some other computer component, where you might end up burning the CPU [not on purpose] or you might encounter error messages after replacing the battery.
