As a new team leader, I would expect to communicate my core leadership values to my direct reports at the outset of our relationship. When the time came for me to provide feedback to one of my more experienced consultants, he would already know my work standards and my expectations. Consequently, he would have a logical basis for trusting my judgment and an ethical motivation to respond professionally and productively.

These are the abilities or competencies that a successful team leader should have regardless of age, gender or organization. Prepare interview questions that explore the ability to make good decisions, delegate, develop and motivate team members, communicate effectively and manage the team's workload. Use behavioral interview questions that explore these competencies such as "Tell me what you take into consideration when delegating the team's workload?" and "Give me an example of how you have motivated your team in your previous position"
