At this time all you need is to claim expertise in some category, by "following" that category. Nobody checks, verifies, or reviews such claims. You don't even need actual expertise in a category to be an expert here and post answers with the authority of an "expert" on that subject.

Look at the confidence score of the person who provided the answer to get a rough estimate of how good other people have found that person's answers to be; higher is generally better. (Don't ... necessarily ... put too much faith in "expert" answers, because a person who is an expert in one category may not be an expert in other categories, but their answers in those categories may still be labelled as expert answers.)
No answers can be added to the WikiAnswers Local category.
After you choose which categories you're an Expert in on your profile, the Answers staff will review your Expert statement, and make you an Expert in the categories for which you qualify. If you aren't sure, please message a Community Assistant, such as myself.
The worst category to supervise on wiki answers is the technology category because of the accuracy of the answers expected.

Currently we allow for our expert users to add rich media & links to their Answers contributions. Expert users are authoritative contributors in their respected categories. Feel free to contact us if you are a candidate as expert within an Answers category.

I am not sure you can find a category on Wiki Answers website. The only thing you can do is search for the questions.
Begin by accurately answering hundreds of questions in a given category. People will take notice. Then they may set you up as an expert and/or a supervisor, or you may ask a senior supervisor about receiving expert status.

You become an expert on answers.com by correctly answering answers on a given section in which you are an expert.
