Power is defined as the work done per unit time and work is defined as the amount of energy transferred by a force over a distance. Through a series of conversions it can also be shown that the power of an electrical circuit component is equal to its voltage multiplied by the current passing through it.

For DC circuits, KW = Volts times Amps divided by 1000. For AC circuits, KW = Volts times Amps Times PF (power factor) divided by 1000.

Only scientific calculators have a "power" key. There is usually some key labelled something like xy. To calculate 2 to the power 10, press 2, then xy, then 10.
