How do you catagorize a animal to a trophic level?

Based on how many energy transferences. For instance, organisms which produce their own food are always called Producers and are at the bottom of every food chain. They transfer their energy to organisms which eat them. Those would be the Primary Consumers. Those in turn transer the energy they've acquired to organisms that eat them, which would be called Secondary Consumers, and so on...
