To remove ours we had to go underneath and take it out that way. Once we got all the bolts out we had to take off the brackets to get it to drop out. Installation is the reverse of removal. Quite a PITA!!!

its not the easiest alt to change. take out the battery & box, loosen pwr steeing pump & loosen/remove the belt, reomve wires on alt(including the battery cause its to close quarters and you'll bump something & sparks will fly)undo alt bracket bolts one of them will back out and come off with whole bracket so you can manipulate the alt up & out. must remove the whole front bracket. then r&r. Its a couple hrs for a reasonable shadetree guy, less experience you may want to take it somewhere, its pretty much of a pain cause it so low it the eng compartment, good luck

you first uplug the battery. there should be some wires on the alt, disconect the with a small wrench or plyers, then take off the belt but remember hoe it goes, then there should be two or three bolts that hold it on from there it is a easy process. After you take the old one off just reverse the whole prosess. Upon inspection of said vehicle it has come to my attention that removing the battery would be a complete waste of time and energy. - MSBILBY

I am assuming it is a 4.0 engine. The Altenator is located on the passenger side in the front of the engine that you will have to get to from the bottom. you should disconnect the battery first, then unplug the wires that are going to it. then look for the bolts that are holding it in. just take them out and whalaa!! Just be careful not to let it fall onto your head while getting it out.

First for safety reasons remove the connector from your battery, your alternator on that car is on the top of the engine to the right of your AC compressor, in order to remove your alternator you need to begin by removing the belt tensioner bolt located to the left of the water pump which is the pulley that has no grooves in the center and the front of your engine block, you might want to go with a socket wrench here im guessing 5mm, it connects to a very small black pulley, after removing this it will losen the belt, now, remove the belt from the alternator pulley, but be careful not to completely remove the belt as this will create more work, now remove the plastic cover on the back of the alternator, it should be part of a thick red wire going to the alternator, now remove that wire from the alternator and put it aside, put your socket tools aside now use either an adjustable wrench, or a basic wrench that fits the bolts on the alternator, id recommend that you try using the round part of the wrench, you may want to try using some bolt breaker grease in order to help ease the force required to remove such an old bolt, be sure not to thread the bolts, if you do, you just created a huge problem. Make sure you purchase the correct alternator for you vehicles engine, these directions are for the 4.7L V8 which requires a 136Amp alternator.

First make sure you disconect the battery, then take the battery out of the vehicle. Then remove the battery box, with the three nuts that hold it on. Then take out the bottom bolt on the alternator , now loosen the top bolt so you can take the pressure of of the belt. Go ahead and remove that bolt as well. Now you will have to remove the bracket that hold the alternator on so you can remove it.

Find a Chilton's repair manual. Or take off the two bolts, 2 wires and belt holding it on. Good luck. (careful 1999 and 1998 and 2000 all use slightly different altenators)
