If we are talking about valve lifters, remove cylinder head and pushrods and lifters will be excessable.

The starter on a 91 Chevy cav. is located at the lower front end of the engine. You can get to it better by jacking the front of the car and attacking it from underneath.

You have to remove the trans. pan, and the selonoids will be right there . Bolted to the valve body.
Lifters usually tap when they get too much water in them, the ball check loses lubrication, you may have a slight leak from your coolant, My lower intake gasket was leaking and i had the same problem.
