You change the starter cord carefully to avoid having the spring jump out of the starter case. If that happens, you really have problems as the 350 G was made by echo. The part number is 177200.23532 for the entire starter assembly if you can locate it. The pulley will need to be carefully removed and taken apart to insert a new pull cord. You should be able to duplicate the knot and rewind the pull cord and reinsert it into the housing in the appropriate place to maintain the spring tension on the cord. If the spring jumps out of the housing, you have a real problem!
Not that it is what you want to especially hear, but you must pull the engine so that you can remove the shrouds that are in the way. Takes a good mechanic about three and a half hours, and others as long as it takes.
engine must be hoisted off the frame at least 6 inches, you can leave everything hooked up except the drive shaftwill come off and need to be guided back into place as you set the engine back doun when finished. If you are not an experienced mechanic dont try this.

how to change a starter on a 6400 johndeere
I have a JD LT 155 C. I have replaced the solenoid and the mower still want start. There is 12 volts between the battery and the solenoid. When I test the voltage between the solenoid and the starter, the reading is 5 to 6 volts. Why is there a drop in the voltage to the starter?
The starter solenoid for most old Fords will work. If you need something specific, a 1975 Ford F-150 starter solenoid will work. Just make sure your replacement solenoid has 2 large posts and 2 small posts. (They all have 2 large posts, its the number of small posts thats important). You can also order an exact replacement for about $15 here: http://www.greenpartstore.com/John-Deere-Starter-Solenoid-Kit--AM138497_p_5144.html Good luck!
