Where are the spark plugs are on an 2003 Xterra?
the spark plugs are located in the top of the engine block. locate your spark plug wires, and follow them down into the holes for the plugs. there should be 3 on one side and 3 on the other, from front to back. they are recessed down in the top of the enigine, so a socket wrench with a long extension will be nessecary. the 6th plug on a 6 cyl engine is EXTREMELY difficult to change. it is in the very back of the engine, down about 14 inches or so from the top. you will not be able to see it without a mirror, as it is very close to the firewall and there is only a couple of inches of space to work with. i recommend haveing a professional do it. its woth the time and money. i recently changed the plugs in my '03 xterra and it took 3 hours. 30 min for the font 5, and 2 1/2 hours for that one plug in the back. it really is that hard to get to.

Hey there, I had the same problem once. I was trying to change the whole set of spark plugs when suddenly I couldn't change the last one (6th), so almost frustrated I read the service manual and I found what under the back seats there is a tool to help you to change them, they have the exactly size to make the change of the last spark plug. Alright I just changed the spark plugs and ignition wires on my 04 Nissan xterra. Seeing how much of a pain the 6th spark is i thought i would post some instructions for the next cat that cant figure it out. (Before you start!) if your reading this you probably already started but you should trace the boot down to the plug to keep tract of the plugs position. alright, staring from the front of the truck you can see the word Nissan on the motor. About one inch to the right and straight down the block is the plug's position. its about 5 1/2 in down. Just use you're index or middle finger to feel around the wall of that block, you will eventually feel a groove in there were the ignition boot fits into, follow that all the way down and you should feel the plug, its sticking up kinda at a right angle (facing the front of the truck). From there its all feel and hand crushing, just take the pain and get the mission accomplished. hope this helps.
