Common problem with these 2000-04 fords, there is a sway bar link (approximately 12" long) which attaches the front strut to the sway bar mounted on the cars underside. The link ends wear and cause a "sloppy" connection between the two points. This is then herd while driving and hitting potholes as a "clunk". Just replace the sway bar link and everything will be fine!
The cause of the clunking is probably the sway bar link. They are made of white platic and eventually wear out. Both sides were shot on my 2001 Taurus at 75,000 miles. It is a job you can do your self if you are handy with tools. The parts are About $28.00 per side at your local auto parts store and about $38.00 each at the Ford Dealer.

Typically the only difference between left and right is where the sway bar link connects. Every Taurus strut I have installed has both mounts so they can be mounted on either side. MGL
A strut link, also known as a sway bar link, is a component of a sway bar that is used to help the automobile take safer and faster corners. One can typically find these links in race cars.
