according to the Haynes Repair Manual for full-size Buick, Olds, and Pontiacs 1985 thru 2002, the starter is changed as follows:
1. disconnect battery 2. raise front of vehicle and support on jack stands. 2a. starter is located between the rad and the motor, near the transmission. 3. working under the vehicle, clearly lable, then disconnect the wires from the terminals on the starter motor and solenoid. 4. remove the mounting bolts and detach the starter. ** NOTE the location of the shims, if any, they must be reinstalled in same position. 5. installation is the reverse of removal.
