the top radiator hose runs to the thermostat housing remove two bolts that hold housing look to see how the old thermostat comes out because the new one goes in just like the old one was clean all of the old gasket off both surfaces so that your new gasket can get a good seal now just put it back on the same as you took it off
where is the thermostat on a 1.4 1997 ford fiesta zetec engine
The thermostat on a fiesta zetec engine is under the air box. The air box and splash guard will need to be removed for access.

The thermostat housing on a 1997 Fiesta Zetec is under the alternator. It is inside the upper radiator hose, where the hose connects to the water pump.

The most effective way to drain a fiesta is to remove the lower radiator hose at the radiator end
Pressure test cooling system to find leak Could be freeze plug, water pump, thermostat housing, bypass hoses etc.
Should be at the engine end of the upper radiator hose
Usually in a removable housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose
Replace {Thermostat}, It is in a closed posistion and is unable to open. Another cause as with the Futura (1.3 Fiesta year 2000) is a valve between the heater and engine, the Thermostat shows normal operating therefore replacement is not needed.
