I own a '98 Nissan Altima and couldn't figure it out on my own. It is called a High Mount Stop Light. I looked in the User's Manual and discovered that there is a diagram that illustrates and explains how to do this.
Push the light fixture assembly towards the rear of the car and then lift the assembly up. (You may need to push the rear window ledge downward slightly to free the tabs. There are two wires (one Red and one Black) going into the round light socket in the center of the fixture. Turn the socket counter clockwise (I had to use a pair of needle nose pliars, because there wasn't room to get my fingers around the socket). Back the socket out of the fixture, and then pull the light straight out of the socket. Push a replacement bulb straight into the socket. (The manual indicates an 18W bulb type T16.) Leave the light socket, with the new bulb, on the ledge, in plain sight, and then press the brake pedal to make sure the light works before you reconnect the light socket into the fixture. Insert the socket, with the new light bulb, into the fixture. Once in place, turn the light socket clockwise to lock it in place. Realign the light fixture to the openings in the ledge and push down and pull the fixture towards the front of the car.
