you best bet from what i hear is to change in throught the passenger wheel well. im about to imbark on this mission my-self too. it seems to me tht you have to take off the pulley's and the alternator and the rest of the pully driven stuff on the front of the engine ( its in sideways so the front of the engine is really the passenger-side). then there is the cover on the front of the engine, looks about 10 bolts, doesnt really seem all tht much trouble. but great cars are theese saturns.

It is a major job. Must remove right motor mount (engine jacked up ). Must remove all belts . Dismount A/C compressor. Remove F.R. wheel & shroud and work thru wheel well. The water pump is under the timing belt, which should be replaced, as well. Pretty much everything you can see which is between the wheel well and the block has to come off.

I just got done changing the water pump on mine. If yours is a 3.1L V6 like mine, it is a tad complicated but this is what I did. First off, disconnect the radiator hose that comes from the water pump to get rid of the coolant from the pump. I don't know for sure if you HAVE to do that, but that's just what I did. I removed what I could of the engine mount so I could get to the belt tensioner. Once I was able to get to the belt tensioner (a 3/8 ratchet fits into the socket) and pull it hard so the serpentine belt then comes loose and take it off around the water pump pulley. Then get yourself a 1/4 ratchet and I believe either an 8 or 10mm socket and loosen the 4 bolts on the metal casing. The casing should come off. Under that you will see the pump itself. Spin the thing a few times to get any extra coolant out of it. Then there should be 5 bolts that hold the spinning pump onto the casing. I believe these are the same size bolts and just take those out as well. There should be a gasket there and carefully take the gasket out. With the new pump, make sure that you line up the gasket right on the new pump because they only line up one right way so check to make sure the gasket holes and the water pump holes are perfectly lined up. Then find the arrow on the pump (it should face otuward towards the coolant resivor tank) and line it up. Put a bolt in so that the gasket stays lined up with the pump. You should apply silicone to the casing (anything gasket-related I always apply sealant) then put the water pump and gasket on the casing and tighten the bolts. I believe the torque spec for the bolts are 18 foot pounds. Then put the metal part on and tighten the 4 bolts on to the same torque. Then go back to the belt tensioner and put the belt around the pulley. More than likely the belt will also come off the power steering pulley and/or the alternator. Then reconnect the hose from the water pump and re-fill coolant. Really it's an easy job, the most complicated part is lining up the gasket on the water pump the right way.

the water pump is behind the timing belt , big job but an be done useally takes about 6 to 10 hours to change take the passenger front wheel off remove the panels in the wheel housing take the alt belt off take the the Power Steering belt off remove the crankshaft bolt remove the cranck shaft pullies remove the water pump pully remove the time belt covers 3 peaces mark engine timing ,remove timing belt water pump in middle of the engine 4 to 8 bolts hold it on, the best way to see were the bolts are is look at the new water pump first and then you will understand how its bolted on remove bolts remove old water pump , scrape old gasket off , install in reverse order , but make sure to be safe also put a new timing belt on and new thermostat and new anti frezze in it , and make sure to aline the timing marks on the 2 top pullies and aline the crankshaft pully , get a book or digram to find out were the timing marks are , and but the timing belt on turn the crankshaft 2 rotations and recheck the timing marks , , big job ive don a few dozen if you atke your time and do it over a few days so you understand whats gonig on you can do it maybe , i wont touch one unless i get 400 dollars , a new water pump aftermarket cost 40 dollars that's how tough the job is

Drain coolant Remove fan shroud Remove 4 bolts securing fan Remove belts Remove fan pulley Remove hoses from pump Unbolt and remove water pump Clean engine surface prior to installing new gasket and pump considering its a sideways mounted engine with a serpentine belt and an ELECTRIC FAN touching the fan isn't going to do you any good.......in fact the water pump isn't even on that side ...its on the passenger side of the engine.......and there is no room to work at all in these cars......do yourself a favor and find a good mechanic because there is no way your going to figure it out

1. jack the vehicle up on both sides, use jack stands if possible.

2. Remove Passanger front tire, along with plastic splash shield

3. Drain coolant

4. With serpentine belt still installed, loosen the 3 bolts on the water pump

pully, don't take them all the way off, just loosen them.

5. Use a 14mm wrench to reduce tention on the serpentine belt enough

so you can slide the belt off

6. Remove the water pump pully bolts, remove pully, or let it rest on the

pump shaft.

7. Remove water pump housing bolts (6 of them) and discard the gasket

8. reverse procedure to reinstall new water pump

take it to a shop. you will have to remove the engine mounts. if you don't have an engine hoist, good luck.

It's not that hard, I've done it many of times. Remove the engine mount (only one). Use a floor jack with a flat piece of wood on the lift, this way it will not damage your transmission pan. Jack up the tranny just to release the weight on the mount; remove mount or push it to the side. Unscrew bolts, about 8 of them. Replace the same as you put on.
