Transaxle Assembly Removal

TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL

TOOLS REQUIRED

* J42098 V6 Crankshaft Bolt Socket * J43405 Engine Support Fixture Adapter * J44014 Torque Converter Bolt Socket * SA9105E Engine Support Bar Assembly REMOVAL

CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON THE HOIST. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.

# Position vehicle on hoist.

# Remove battery. 2.1 Disconnect battery cables (negative first, positive second). 2.2 Move fan control module. Leave wiring connected, lift module up and away from bracket, and position out of the way. 2.3 Remove battery hold-down bracket. 2.4 Remove battery.

# Disconnect battery feed to underhood fuse block. # Disconnect coolant hose from underhood fuse block cover. # Release retaining tabs on underhood fuse block cover and remove. # Release retaining tabs (2) on underhood fuse block and roll fuse block back (1) to access electrical connectors.

# Remove following connectors from under hood fuse block: 1) Engine 68 way 2) Forward Lamp 68 way 3) I/P 68 way 4) Forward Lamp 2 way (White) 5) I/P 2 way (Black) 6) I/P 2 way (Green) 7) I/P 2 way (Brown) # Lift fuse block off case. IMPORTANT: There are two tabs that hold the hard shell grommets in place at the bottom of the grommet. Disengage tabs to remove grommet from case.

# Remove harnesses from underhood fuse block case by releasing retaining tabs on the bottom of the hard shell grommets. # Engine # Forward Lamp # Instrument Panel (I/P)

# Remove underhood fuse block case fastener, and remove case from battery tray.

# Remove battery tray fasteners and battery tray. For 4-Cylinder vehicles only, perform steps 12 through 14:IMPORTANT: Note the original position of the A.I.R. components.

# Remove clamp from A.I.R. hose behind the cooling fan. # Separate the A.I.R. tube from the hose and push the tube back towards the transaxle.

# Remove the hose clip holding the two Power Steering lines together.

# Disconnect control cable from transaxle range switch lever with a screwdriver. # Remove control cable bracket from rear powertrain mount. Tie cable and bracket to dash panel.

# Remove transaxle electrical connector and ground wire from transaxle. IMPORTANT: One of the wiring harness mounting brackets on the V6 engine is fastened behind an engine-to-transaxle mounting bolt. This bracket cannot be removed at this point. It will be removed prior to engine/transaxle separation. # Remove remaining wiring harness attachments from transaxle.

# Remove transaxle range switch electrical connectors. # Remove upper engine-to-transaxle mounting bolts.

# Remove accessory drive belt from generator. There is no need to remove belt completely (V6 only).

# Remove accessory drive belt tensioner assembly (V6 only).

# Remove generator (V6 only).

# Disconnect output speed sensor electrical connector. Remove harness from mounting stud.

# Install Engine Support Bar Assembly SA9105E with Engine Support Fixture Adapter J43405 as shown (L4 shown).

# Install engine support fixture SA91OSE with engine support fixture adapter J43405 as shown (V6 shown). # Remove frame assembly. NOTICE: To prevent damage to CV joint boots, be careful not to allow them to contact other parts during the removal process. Also, never pull on the shaft assembly. NOTICE:When removing the right hand axle shaft, the transaxle stub shaft may come out of the transaxle with the axle shaft. When this occurs, inspect the axle shaft seal in the transaxle for damage and replace if necessary.

# Use a pry bar to remove axle shafts from transaxle. Leave axle shafts in steering knuckles and secure axle shafts up and out of way of transaxle removal path.

# Remove engine-to-transaxle bracket. (L4 shown, V6 similar)

# Remove starter solenoid electrical connections. IMPORTANT: To gain access to V6 starter assembly mounting bolts, the wiring harness mounting bracket on the rear of the engine block must be removed. # Remove starter motor. (V6 shown, L4 similar) IMPORTANT: The V6 flexplate has 6 bolts, 3 of these connect the flexplate to the torque converter and are recessed in the plate. The 4 cylinder flexplate has only 3 bolts and all are used to connect the flexplate to the torque converter.

# Use Torque Converter Bolt Socket J44014 to remove flex plate to torque converter bolts through starter opening in engine block. Tory V6 Crankshaft Bolt Socket J42098 can be used to turn the V6 crankshaft.

# Remove transaxle oil cooler line assembly from transaxle. # Remove lower two engine to transaxle mounting bolts. # Lower vehicle.

# Mark position of and remove left transaxle mount bolts. # Raise vehicle.

# Slide hydraulic lift table under transaxle. # Lower vehicle slowly until transaxle is on hydraulic lift table. Place a wood block between barrel of transaxle and surface of table. # Remove remaining engine-to-transaxle mounting bolts. # Slide transaxle away from engine assembly and raise vehicle away from transaxle.
