You can purchase a HFC detection tool from MAC OR SNAP ON and what you do is wave the wand around the fittings where there is a connection with o rings and it will sound off and get louder if it detects the hfc out of freon leaking out from connections or if you have a really bad leak take a hospitial stethascope they use to check your heart with pull out round end end insert a small metal tube in it and go around all the fittings. you should be able to hear a leak then, but when it gets that bad you should be able to see it also you can spray a mixture of soapy dishwashing liquid with water around joints and see leaks or just go to auto parts store and buy all new o rings to match each fitting and replace them all but that requires removal and teardown of AC SYSTEM you do not want to let freon out into the air its illeagle and dangerous so just take it to a proffessional
where do you add freon to a 1998 Toyota Avalon. Where is it located ? thats actually something u have to take to a repair shop to do. make sure the repair shop services the ac for ur car. depending where you go it can be a bit costly depending on the size of each of them.

You don't. If it needs refrigrant, it has a leak. Take this to a professional. You have neither the tools nor the expertise to repair.
If it has R-12 refrigerant it must be converted to R-134. You can get a kit at Wal-Mart or auto parts--comes with instructions
Check the Freon pressure first. The AC compressor will not turn on if the Freon pressure is too low.
The freon should be R12, Which requires a license to buy these days and is very expensive. You can buy a kit to convert it to R134 freon, You should check with your local auto parts store for prices

The first thing that you need to do is check and make sure that there is freon in the system first and if so then check the electrical portion out for the a/c. If you have no freon in the system the you need to determine where the leak/leaks are and repair as needed.........

If you got to any auto parts store, they will have bottles of r134a that you can buy that have gauges in the handles that will tell you when you have enough in it. If you system wont cool or is out of freon you have a leak and should get it check to have a repair done, an ac system with out freon has no lub either and that will lead to compressor burn out. The freon cools the air and lubs the compressor.
