Use the dipstick? At the back of the engine (standing at the front of the car) there are two dipsticks. The one on the left is for checking the final drive (front differential) and the one on the right is for checking the transmission. You might have to look for it, being down under a bunch of hoses (fuel lines, vacuum lines, etc),but it is there.

What is the transmission fluid capacity on a 2001 subaru forester?
When adding transmission fluid to a Subaru Legacy or almost any other vehicle with an automatic transmission, your, first of all, going to need a long necked funnel. When you check the fluid level you pull out a dip stick that normally sits in a tube of some sort. Once you check the level, leave the dip stick out and place the small end of the funnel into the hole the stick came out of. Then slowly pour the transmission fluid into the funnel. Be sure you do not over fill the fluid level as it can cause damage to the transmission. Once the desired level is reach, return the dip stick to the tube. Always check the fluid level with the vehicle at normal operating temperature and idling in park.
Recommended Fluid is Dexron II or Dexron III ATF as per page 10-23 in the "OWNER'S MANUAL".....
There is a fill plug on the side of the transmission. Remove the plug and if fluid does not run out then insert your little finger in the hole and crook it. If you do not feel fluid then service it to full. If you are driving and hear a noise from the transmission, then it is to late.
