Have to have a computer OB VAT Tool or Volkwagen dealer only check. The other way is to check the fluid when the engine is warm . There is a plug on the side of the transmission pan.
I have a 99 jetta, and you are unable to check the transmission fluid on your own. You will have to take it to a service station where they will check it for you for free.

It don't have one. It is filled for "lifetime" with very special and expensive transmission fluid.

If you have a tdi jetta then you would have a sealed transmission, so you can not check the fluid level on those transmissions
Volkswagen Jetta's produced in 1996 do not have dipsticks. To check the fluid levels one will need to take out the speedometer sensor.
The transmission is serviced with lifetime fluid and does not have a dipstick. The fluid can be changed by the dealership with a special tool.
CHF11S type power steering fluid is recommended for the 1995 Volkswagen Jetta. Make sure not to overfill the fluid container.
