If the Mac is like my old PowerBook and desktop PowerMac and only has DVI connectors, then you will need a DVI to HDMI adapter. You plug it into the Mac's DVI connector and plug the HDMI cable into it and the TV.
To turn a MacBook (or any Intel based Mac) into an HDTV you need software such as EyeTV and a USB tuner. (See links below)

Must be the way you set up the HDMI control. The HDTV should come on when you turn the PS3 if the TV is off. You might look at what you are turning on the HDTV with. I use my cable remote and it turns on the cable box home theater and HDTV. I could set it up to also turn on the PS3 if I wanted too.
