Each game has its own instructions on how to use the cable with the GBA/ GBASP, but the most important thing to know is that it plugs into socket #4 (for player four). Otherwise, and it might not work.

There is a cable known as the GBA to GCN Cable which allows connections between the Gamecube and the Gameboy Advance (GBA SP works as well) systems. Plugging it into the 2nd socket (since a player 1 gamecube controller is required as well) will allow for communications between the two systems to be available.

Depending on the game you are using, the cable might have to be put in a certain GameCube socket. Make sure that the GameBoy Advance has no game in it unless you need it.

The way I know: You can get one on Pokemon Colleseum. (it's a game for the gamecube) than trade it to your sapphire or ruby game using the link cable (the one you use to conect a gameboy advance to a gamecube) than you have to migrate it to your diamond (or pearl) game.
