I believe you are talking about creating an Adhoc Wireless network link. Whilst this is not the most widely used method of wireless, it can sometimes be done. The easiest way to connect from a wireless laptop/PC to another wireless laptop/PC is to use a wireless router or Wireless Access Point (WAP). These are normally quite cheap (less than $100 in AU) and have good instruction on how to get this going. A good user would take about 15mins to get basic wireless functionality, such as requested in this.

Ad-hoc networks (connecting directly from wireless laptop/PC to another wireless laptop/PC) can be a bit harder to get going without a WAP. To achieve this, each laptop/PC wireless network adapter must be configured for ad-hoc mode versus the standard alternative infrastructure mode. This is achieved in different ways depending on your adapter, if yours can do this at all. In addition, all wireless network adapters on the ad-hoc network must use the same SSID and the same channerl number. Connecting more than 2 devices in an ad-hoc network also has issues, like connection speeds and it can be hard to manage.

A support call to the manufacturer of your Wireless Network Adapter or Laptop may help with this. Also, your ISP (though they won't like it) may be able to help.

Instal a wireless card in your computer. Cheers

You can also install a wireless router.

If your computer is already wireless capable, then all you need is a Wireless Broadband connection. Most cable internet services have a wireless option and all you really need is a wireless router connected to any high speed Internet connection.

First of all you need a contract with an ISP (Internet Service Provider). They usually charge per month.

Then the situation depends on whether you will use dial-up, or a more permanent connection such as ADSL. With dial-up, your computer needs a modem. Then you plug in the telephone cable into your computer. With ADSL, probably different types of connections are possible; the connection I have uses a standard network cable that goes from the computer network card, to the ADSL equipment provided by the ISP. Of course, in this case the computer has to have a network card. In any case, ask the ISP for details on setting up your computer - thinks like IP address, and DNS (the specific addresses you have to configure vary, depending on the ISP).

The easiest way - is to use a local 'hot-spot' from an internet cafe or public building. Just remember - it's not a secure connection so don't do anything that needs passwords entered !

What do you mean by wi-fi connection?

A wi-fi connection is a wireless connection. Imagine a regular modem, which is connected by a wire to the phone point at one end, and the PC at the other. Wi-fi is when this setup is wireless, the router is still wired to the phone point, but it gives off a signal to which other devices can connect to. A PC can connect to this using a receiving device, and a Nintendo DS can connect to it too. That is an example of a wi-fi internet connection.
