You can go into system link, which is multiplayer to play with friends around you. That answer does not make sense to me but could be accurate.
As far as I Know. Without the internet you can only play people next to you with there own controller on your console and you can call it co-op split screen or multiplayer that depends on what the game allows. I was surprised when I learned how many games could only play against someone online and not on the same console.

∙ 13y agoyou can not use the internet without connecting. It might be possible to give the PS3 updates using another source to download the update, but you would still be using the internet to do that.

∙ 13y agoyes you can connect to the internet with ethernet cable. To enter the network you must be online and to be online you must have a Broadband internet service and some form of connection device/s that will allow either WiFi or ethernet connection to the PS3
