Best Answer

A lava-lava is a garment, generally rectangular, tied loosely around the waist. Mostly worn by Polynesians, especially Samoans.

Therefore, it is the shape that you are going to crochet--a rectangle. Oftentimes, lava-lavas have a design on the material. So, if I were making a lava-lava, I would look for blanket-type patterns. I would also figure to have a closed pattern. Meaning that I wouldn't be looking for a "lacey" or open-stitched pattern.

I have attached some links for some patterns that I think would give you an idea of the type of pattern I am referring to here.

Do you need knitting needles to crochet?

No, you can only crochet with a crochet hook. Answer Crochet is done with crochet hooks (they come in many sizes) not knitting neeldes. But you can also use your fingers (finger crochet) or there is also some thing called Knooking which uses a tool that has a crochet hook on one end and a knitting needle point on the other.
