How do you deal with negative people?

Negative people can really affect us if we react to them negatively. The key to dealing with negative people is to continue being positive and pleasant no matter how negative they get. If you do this you will not be affected by their negativity and they will either continue in their negativity alone, or realize they don't have to be that way. "How people treat you is their karma. How you react is yours" It is hard not to be affected by negative people. If it is at all possible, try to avoid the negative encounters from the start. If you are forced to deal with negative people, (perhaps you work in customer service), you have several options: Ignore the negativity, try to deal with the root problems causing the negativity, or deflect the negativity. 1. Ignoring the negativity. Sometimes this will help the situation, if the person feels that being negative is not helping their situation. However, depending on how it is done, it can also make things worse, as some people will feel that you are not sympathetic to their situation, before they realize that the negativity is not helping them. 2. If it is at all possible to deal with the root problems causing the negativity, it may well be worth it. Note, that this takes a lot more time than the other techniques, and if you don't have to deal with the person on a regular basis, it may not be worth it. Also, you may not necessarily have the type of relationship where you can deal with the root cause of that person's problems. 3. Deflect the negativity. Quite often, negative people can fixated on a certain aspect of life and downward spiral into negativity. If you can deflect their thoughts to a neutral or more positive topic, they may be able to avoid the downwards negativity spiral. 4. Another dealing method is humour. For example, exaggerating the negativity of a situation may help a person think, 'well it's not that bad.' Be careful with this approach as well, as some people might think you are mocking them. If they take offense, apologize immediately and strongly. Hopefully, the other person will be able to see the humour in the situation and cast aside their negativity. The key to whatever you try is to maintain a positive attitude and not get drawn down! We all have to deal with negative people sometimes, so hopefully this advice will help deal with these situations!
