If you *really* needed to defrost a steak in five minutes, you can either use the defrost setting on a microwave (watch it carefully), or you can place it in a moderately hot bowl of water while it is still in the packaging.

Ideally you would leave the steak out in the kitchen for as long as it takes to get to room temperature. Frozen steaks should be left overnight, or all day, and chilled steaks about an hour.
