A "root" or "base" word is the original word that a different form came from. For example- the root/base word of wonderful is wonder; the root/base word of shakily is shake; the root/base word of tasty is taste.

A base is a word that can be modified with prefixes or suffixes; 'cycle' ---> bicycle, tricycle, unicycle, cyclist, cyclic, cyclone wheras the root word for 'cycle' is actually the Greek word from 300B.C. 'kyklos' meaning circle
