It is a false premise that Windows Vista runs less efficiently than Windows XP. Windows Vista is designed in a way that, after a certain amount of RAM and processing power, it would be faster than XP on the same hardware. Windows Vista uses more RAM because it loads pieces of programs you use most into it, in a method call "pre-fetching." Since RAM is faster than the hard drive, it is faster to launch programs from RAM rather than the hard drive. You can disable many background servicesand programs, and reduce Vista's memory footprint. The same programs can be disabled in XP too, though, so it is not a problem specific to Vista. To disable services in Vista:1. Open the Start pearl.2. Enter services.msc3. Click continue to acknknowledge the UAC.4. Right-click any services you don't need, and select "Properties."5. Change it's startup type to "disabled."You can probably safely disable the following services:* Cryptographic Services * IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules * IPsec Policy Agent * Network Location Awareness * Program Compatibility Assistant * Shell Hardware Detection * Diagnostic Policy Service * Distributed Link Tracking Client * IP Helper * Messenger Sharing Folders USN Journal Reader Service * Network List Service * Offline Files * Print Spooler * Readyboost * Remote Access Connection * Server * Tablet PC Input Service * Windows Error Reporting Service * Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) * Windows Time
