Thread an embroidery needle with enough floss or yarn to hold the number of cranes you wish to put on a strand. A common length of cranes is 25 birds per strand. Tie a stopper knot or decorative bead at the very end to keep the birds from sliding off. After folding the paper crane there will be a small hole in the bottom of the figure. Bring your threaded needle up through the crane from the bottom and gently exit the figure through the point in the bird's back. Subsequent birds are strung the same way. The birds may sit directly next to each other on the strand, or may be separated by beads or 5mm lengths of coffee stirrer tubes if you wish.
Origami is very simple; all you need is a sheet of paper and your hands. There is origami paper specially designed for this craft. The paper comes already square and is thin enough to allow the multiple folds that most origami projects require. Some paper is colored on one side to enhance the finished result. (Less strict forms, technically not origami, may involve scissors or even glue.)
Books or online sources can provide instruction on origami. Most origami projects begin with a few simple forms to familiarize the beginner. Each piece has its own individual design, which gives origami its ability to challenge its practitioners and provide fresh variations.
There are also instructional videos showing step-by-step folds. (see related links) == ==
