It is important to connect everything back to the alliances that were created between nations and why they were created. Then you should look at why the assassination of the Arch Duke caused everything to fall apart. Furthermore, you can look into how the US got involved and why. You should also look at the effects of the influenza pandemic of 1918. These are some of the things you should look at. As far as the end of the war, you should look into why Germany failed and how it failed. The most important thing is probably the consequences of WW1. Such as, the effect on the German economy (and how France really wanted them to be "punished." Some historians now consider WW1 and WW2 to be one war with the short lived peace as the weak economy (and other incidents) that caused German struggles lead to the rise of the Nazis.
