Since the FOI-(freedom of information) act, all you have to do is fill out a postcard at the PO, or online with your inquiry. There is a spot on there that asks if your a lawyer or something like that. Check no and put your name in there. The other person that answered this was partially right about the "Federal Government" issue he stated. BUT---The Post office is a federal agency and that "rented" po box is public property. There is nothing private about it anymore - thanks to that FOI act.
There are two ways to apply for a Post Office Box in the US. If you visit your Post Office you will be asked to fill out PS Form 1093, show 2 forms of ID (one with a picture) and provide payment for the box and a deposit for the two keys.
You may also apply online at You will type in the zipcode of the Post Office you want to open your box and then choose the box size you desire. You will then take this form and your receipt to the Post Office where you have chosen service. You will need 2 forms of ID (one with a picture) to show that you are who you claim and that you live where you claim.

A Post Office box (PO Box) is a separate location to the street address where mail can be stored and picked up by the owner. You simply should include the recipient's name, the PO Box the City, State and Area code. Also, since a PO box is owed by the Postal Service you cannot send a Fed EX to a PO Box.

You can't. The whole idea of a PO box is to be used instead of a street address. The post office will not give out a street address of the owner.
HM Revenue and customers - just had a tax rebate cheque from that address !
Yes you can. The post office apparently places a notice in the post box for the owner, to sign for a registered mail at the counter.
