On almost all cars, the thermostat is located in the head of the motot where the top radiator hose is connected. Usually 2 bolts or nuts, remove these, and remove hose/housing. Some cars require you to remove hose first, some you can leave it attached. Clearance, flesability of hose. Most have a paper gasket which must be cleaned off and a new one used. Some have a rubber ring that goes around the thermostat. Large half of the thero. goes toward the motor, some are out of round and must be placed to fit.

The 1998 Nissan Sentra has a timing chain. It never needs changing as long as the oil is changed in a reasonable amount of time.

For the 1988 1.6 and for most cars, follow the top radiator hose from the radiator to the engine block. Remove the hose from the engine block then remove the flange the hose was connected to (usually 2 bolts but may be 3 bolts on the Nissan). The thermostat is behind the flange.
A check engine light could mean many things on a 1988 Nissan Sentra. The light could mean anything to a fuel cap not being tight enough to bad spark plugs.
To replace the thermostat on a 1988 535i, first locate the top radiator hose and remove the end connected to the motor. Take out the old thermostat and use gasket cleaner to remove the old gasket. Then replace the gasket and thermostat exactly as it was when it came out. Tighten up the radiator hose over the thermostat.

Remove the water supply hose from your 1988 Chevy Cavalier thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat housing bolts. Lift the old thermostat out and drop in the new thermostat.
