There are many ways to measure concentration, but the most useful is Molarity, the number of moles of the solute divided by the volume (in Liters) of the solvent. For instance, a 1M salt solution contains 1 mole of salt in 1L of water.

Say you have a 100g salt solution that has 20g of salt. 20/100g is salt, which is 20%. If you have a 25g salt solution that has 3g of salt, it would be 3/25g is salt. Simply multiply the numerator and the denominator by 4 to get 12/100g, or 12%!

For a known solution (acid or base) of unknown concentration, you can use titration, to determine its concentration. A way to get close would be to weigh (measure the mass, I mean) a measured volume. Suppose you have salt NaCl dissolved in water. Measure the mass of say 250 ml of the solution. The water should have a mass of 250 g, so if the solution has a 260 g mass, then there are 10 grams of NaCl in the 250 ml, or 40 grams NaCl in 1 liter. From that, you can determine the number of moles from the atomic masses of Sodium and Chlorine.

You have to take the solute divided by the solvent in a solution. For example there is 12g solute in a 36g solution. Then you take 12 divided by 24 because 36-12=24 which is your solvent.
