# How do you find the density of something?

## Answer

###### Wiki User

###### 01/30/2011

you have to know the mass and volume of the object. density equals the mass divided by the volume. if the mass of something was 5 and the volume 1 the density would be 5

### Why is density an useful property for identifying matter?

Density if useful for identifying matter because if there is an
unkown substance, you find the density (mass / volume) and use a
reference sheet to see which are the closest density. Matter is
what something is made up of so you use the density to find out
what the substance is!

### How do you test if gold is real?

To test if something is pure gold, you will need to find out the
density. The density of pure gold is 19.3 g/mL. To find the
density, u will need to find out the mass and volume of the object
then divide the mass by the volume ( m/V ). If your answer is not
19.3 then it is not pure gold.

### What do mass volume and density have in common?

Well, in order to find the density of an object, here's what you
must do:
1) find the volume
2) find the mass (by weighing)
3) Mass over volume = density
Mass volume tells us how much space something takes up. Density
tells us how much is in that space i.e. how compact the molecules
are.
