You may find the date of manufacture by going to savage99.com This should give you the info that you seek.

with the info listed above i would say that it was manufactured somewere between 1952 and 1958. those were the only years they manufactured them in 300 savage.

A 742 isn't all that expensive of a rifle, I wouldn't give much over $300 for it.I believe there's also a recall on a certain date of manufacture, make sure to check.

Browning.com has a sn function listed under customer service you can use to find out.

you should pay about 300 to about 350 dollars for a Remington 243 rifle

Your Savage was made in the year 1937 if you have a model 99 lever action rifle.

Look on the LEFT side of the barrel, about 1/2 inch forward of the reciever. You may see 2 or 3 VERY small letters stamped there (may need a good light and a magnifier) If you can find them, the link below will take you to the barrel code data from Remington- shows month and year of manufacture,

The Remington Model 721 in .300 H&H was manufactured in 1948 with a 24" or 26" barrel.
