slipping or noisy belt
The squeaking of a steering column can usually be fixed by adding power steering fluid. It can also be fixed by replacing the belt in the car.
Check to make sure the belt it tight and not slipping at idle. After that try a fluid change. If those things do not fix the problem then you need a new power steering pump.
if you look under the hood check where the fan belts should be, you could be missing the power steering belt, get it replaced and that should fix it right up. they only cost around 5 quid
The power steering pump on an automobile will not air lock. If the power steering is not working properly, it could be that the pump itself is in need of repair. Replacing the power steering belt might also fix this problem. Also check to make sure the pump has enough fluid to operate properly.
Tighten the power steering belt. Why are you trying to steer during start up?

This can range from zero to $80. The most common power steering noise is due to the belt slipping when turning. If the blet has not been slipping very much, it simply requires tightening the belt which can be done for no cost if you have the proper wrench size to loosen and tighten the assembly. If the belt is damaged, it will need to be replaced and can require more lablr ans other belts may have to be removed to install the new belt. Also, some power steering units use 2 belts. This can increase the cost to as much as $80 for labor and new belts.
Sounds like youve broken a belt. Battery light comes on when the battery is no being charged. Power steering stops when the power steering pump is not being driven. I dont know about on a mini cooper s but a lot of cars have 1 belt driving both of these things. Chekc under your bonnet, you will likely have some broken bits of belt hanging around and a few bare wheel/pulley type things. Your car will continue to run (minus power steering) untill the battery dies (couple hundred K's max, likely much less) so head straight to a garage. Its a routine fix that shouldnt take more than an hour or so.
Steering rack worn? Power steering pump going bad? Worn steering or suspension components? Frozen steering shaft?
