When is the last time you did a balance and rotation. If tires are wearing from a 1/4 of life or less, just get new tires. You also could need an alignment, or tie rod ends and other bushings could be worn out. Make sure there is nothing bent and everything is greased and no grease sepage anywhere. If there is, this is a good sign that parts are worn and need to be replaced.

The transmission ( or transaxle on your front wheel drive Mercury Mystique ) is in the engine compartment bolted to the engine ( on the drivers side of the engine )
If it is vibrating on the steering wheel, you may need an alignment. If it is vibrating at the tire area you may have a bent wheel or need to have your tires check, take it to any tire shop and they can test. I had the same problem and it was a bent wheel.
