First remove the Door panel on the vehicle and make sure any of the lock or handle rods are not broken or diaconected. Secondly if that's not the problem you may have a broken door latch. Price varies per brand name on parts but it should not be a huge fix.
Remove the door panel, retrieve the lock and put it back in its retainer. Check the lock handle to see if the plastic is broken as most locks falling inside the door actually occur because someone has punched the lock in an attempt to break in.
Take door panel off inside of door, detach rod connected to door lock and two nuts off door handle. Remove and replace. Before removal, check to see if connector lock is not broken causing your problem. This is common for older model cars.
remove enter door panel. check the latch rod from handle to keeper spring latch (lock). either bent or detached. end.

door handle has lock end and non-lock end. non-lock end is held to door by single bolt on latch side of door. remove bolt and slide door handle toward front of car. it will disengage from door. ease handle lock mechanism through opening in door. it will be broken, a known volkswagen design flaw. take handle to vw dealer and purchase repair parts ($20-$30). repair parts come with consumer friendly directions.
Just replace it with another door handle. This is easier since you don't have to take the time to fix it.
To fix a door latch already in the locked position, first you pick the lock. Actually you many not need to do that unless there is only one door into the room. What you will do will depend on the type of lock. If the lock is in the door handle, there may be a small rectangular indentation underneath the door handle. If there is, put a small screw driver in it and take push it in. While it is pushed in pull out the door handle. You will then see the unit that goes into the hole in the door jam. It will have a place that you can pull back with a screwdriver. Pull it back and then you should be able to open the door. If the lock is one that will not work and you are inside. There should be some screws in the lock itself that you can unscrew and do the same thing. There are also solvents available at hardware stores that you can squirt into difficult locks that will let them open with a key.
Common problem with Crv's. You will have to remove the door panel by removing handle screws and then screws which hold the door handle. Remove the panel by using a screwdriver. Once removed take off the plastic and spray nut looser on the inside of the door when the lock parts are. Use the automatic lock button to open and close. It may take awhile but it will free itself.
hold open your door handle and push the lock back in to place where the jaws clamp on to the door post
