Alot of times a racing idle is caused by an airleak after the carb. or throdle body. check to see if the PCV (postive crank vent) is disconnected. Alot of times these are located, depending on madel, on the top of the valve cover near the fire wall, or under the intake just behind the distributor. It's not easy to see, but often the vac. line will crack.

The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve is mounted on the throttle body
ford suck. go Chevy
Not really possible. There is an idle speed control on most 1988 v6 machines. If you are experiencing high idle, it may be a broken ISC. The idle speed is controlled by computer. http://www.marksatterfield.com
The IAC (idle air control) at the throttle body is usually the problem.
There is no adjustment you should mess with. The ECM maintains the correct idle unless you have problems like vacuum leaks.
Throttle plate may be stuck - try to free with a screwdriver
There should be a screw near the end of the throttle cable on the throttle body.
by the set screw on throttle cable
i have a 1988 Ford Bronco XLT 5.0 4x4. The truck will start and idle for about 15 to 30 seconds then acts like it has no fuel and dies.
The engine is EFI so the idle setting is computer generated. You'll need and engine programmer to change this setting.
Your idle air control valve may be dirty or clogged, the fuel filter may need changing or the rpm is set to low.
The 1998 Ford Ranger owners manual shows a starter relay in the power distribution box in the engine compartment . It is the # 6 relay . Ford suggests disconnecting your battery before servicing anything in the PD BOX , which means your Ranger will have to relearn its idle , the radio clock and stations will have to be reset etc.
Remove, clean or replace the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve.
On the 4.0 L - OHV engine , the DPFE sensor is on the drivers side of the engine , mounted below the idle air control valve
In the power distribution box in your engine compartment , maxi-fuse # 4 ( 20 amp ) is for your power windows on a 1998 Ford Ranger Ford states to disconnect your battery before servicing anything in the PD BOX , which means your Ranger will have to relearn its idle , the clock and radio stations will have to be reset etc.
choke idle adjustment on 1988 Buick Riviera
Fuel mixture can not be adjusted it is computer controled. You can adjust the idle by removing the cover where throttle cable attaches to the throttle body and turning adjustment screw
According to www. the ranger station . com ( no spaces ) the oil pressure on a 2.9 L is 20 PSI @ warm idle and 55 PSI @ 2000 RPM
Vacume hose(s)/system problem, or dirty fuel filter would be my first 2 guesses.
It was the dis ignition module changed it out and runs great!!
Have the computer scanned for trouble codes. The problem may be a bad Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) or Idle Control Valve (ICV).
Sounds like the Idle Air Control valve.
Per AllData buy High Idle Service Kit from ford part # xf1z-15k607-aa. Must splice into cable just before TPS (Throtle Possition Sensor) Conector. Low idle usually Idle Air solinoid. A vacuum leak can give you the same problem. Make sure you have none.
There is no idle screw. The idle air control valve controls the idle and can be set on different settings. You should consult a Ford dealer or mechanic for proper settings.
