After completing a song, stars are dependent on your score and not on the percentage of notes hit. So the higher the score the more stars you have. The score levels for 5 stars varies for each song and each difficulty.

An easier way of judging how close you are to 5 stars in games pre metallica, instead of going by the score, is by checking your stats after the song, to get 5 stars you need an average multipler of 2.8x, because of this it's actually possible to 4 star a song, and then get 5 stars on a 2nd run but get a lower score at the same time.

You could manage this, for example, by using star power on an area with loads of chords and get 4 stars at the end, and on the 5 star run use star power in an area with exactly the same number of notes, but they're all single notes and not chords so you would score less in the 5 star star power run, due to chords being worth more points. It's little technical details like this that mean you could actually score less on a 5 star run than on a 4 star run depending on how you do things. Admitedly though, both the 4 star and 5 star runs would have to be very close to the 2.8x mark for this to happen.

To demonstrate what I mean, take All The Pretty Faces from GH5 on expert. Let's say you do two runs and do a perfect FC both runs, but use star power on the massive chord sections on the first run, and use star power on the single note hammer-ons after the chord sections (which will have 1 extra note in the star power area) on the second run. Both runs average multiplier will be virtually the same, the second one will be about 0.005x-0.01x higher. However, due to using star power on the chord sections in the first run, the first run will be around 150,000 points higher than the second run, even though the average multiplier is slightly lower. (Have tested this and it's actually about 152,000 higher)

You get stars through rep, so the ammount of stars will represent your rep.

rep is the total of feedback you receive from playing other players, good rep will earn you stars and bad rep will lessen the ammount of stars you have. you receive bad rep if you quit games i.e. quit during fifa 09, halo, or Call of Duty etc and if you are aggresive and so on along those lines. but you can dish out rep to, make the quitters pay by going the frieends menu and recently played select with a or x depending on the console and then x or square depending on the console to give feedback and allocate the specific rep due to their behaviour.

Only after you reach the second island, you are able to receive a five-star warrant, at which point there will be FBI's and Double helicopters chasing you. Reaching the third island allows you to get the maximum six stars, at which point the military is called in with Rhino tanks and Barracks OL cars.
