I would really like to know the answer to that question too. I sprayed Windex on a few spots on my stainless steel refrigerator and now those places are a lighter color than the rest of the fridge.

You can also do the following:
Use a small bowl with hot water and a few tables spoons and mix it. Dip a damp soft cloth into the mixture and go with the grain (IMPORTANT!). Then wipe with another dry soft cloth with the grain. You may also want to go over it after with just a wet cloth to get any residue off the finish. After that, you can polish with the standard stainless steel cleaner normally recommended.
