It's easiest to start with your dog in a sit. Hold a treat in front of his nose to get his attention. When he is interested enough to follow the treat with his nose, slowly lower your hand straight down in front of his paws. When your hand reaches the ground, slowly move it forward (in the direction you want his paws to move so he can lie down fully). Simple, but what do you do if it doesn't work with your dog? Try this alternate technique. Sit on the ground with your knees raised and your feet on the ground in front of you. Reach under your knees with the treat and get your dog's attention. Draw the treat back under your knees and let him follow it. In order to get under your knee, he'll have to lie down. That's when you give the treat and praise. Let him nibble on the treat while he is lying down. Gently scratch his back at the shoulders. With your hand in this position you can easily catch him if he tries to stand or sit up. It's not much use to have a dog who lies down and then immediately pops back up again. You want him to lie down and stay down until released, right? To teach him to stay lying, hold him gently in position while he nibbles and you praise, for a couple of seconds. Then give a release command like "that'll do." This command gives him permission to get up and do whatever he likes. Don't use a common word like "okay" because you'll say it in ordinary conversation often and this will confuse your dog. Once you give the release, stop giving the treat and praise, and let him get up. Give reinforcement (treats and praise) ONLY while he is in the down position. If you give the treat after he gets up, you are reinforcing getting up. You want to reinforce lying down, so give the treat while he is lying down. Gradually build up the amount of time you have him stay down until he can do it for 30 seconds. This will probably take several days. When he can, go back to short stays and cautiously take a step away, and then right back again. Slowly build up how far you can get away from him while he lies down. Eventually you'll be able to ask him to lie down where ever he is relative to you and to stay down as needed.

Another contributor said: make sure your dog is comfy, and a little hungry. be prepared with treats [sausage or cheese are great, but any will do] using a treat, get your dog into a sit position. wrap your hand around the treat, then put your hand between the dogs front feet. slowly drag it towards you, and the dogs nose should follow. as soon as your dog lies down, say LIE DOWN! and give him the treat and praise. practice this about 10-15 times, then you can try it withought the treat. if your dog makes a mistake, say 'uh-oh!' and turn your back on him. First, teach your dog to lay down by holding a treat in your hand. have your dog sit, then lower the treat to the floor and then after a few times he will lay down. soon, after a lot of practice, he can lay down with a motion of your hand going down.

Another contributor with another answer: You tell the dog "Lie down (insert dog's name here)" in a firm and unwavering voice. When the dog lies down, you reward him/her with a doggy-treat. If the dog does not seem to know what you are talking about, keep telling him to lie down until he gets it. Then reward him. If the dog still does not get it, then take both hands and shove him down into a lying position. Reward him. Keep doing the above three steps as long as necessary. Do not stop, ever! Sooner or later, that dog is going to lie down when you tell him/her to do so. Don't forget to reward him/her for the effort. Do not ask the dog to do his "Lay down" trick without his/her reward.

well there are a lot of different ways to get your dog to lie down, but i find that the best way to do it is the most basic.

1. hold a treat in your hand and make sure that the dog can smell it.

2.get the dog in a sitting persition and but the treat to its nose.

3.slowly move your hand downwards towards the floor so your dog will crouch down.

4.then drag your hand across the floor so your dog will be forst to lie flat to get to it.

your dog may try to get up several times so you need to be patiant.if this techneque doesant work for you

first you have to get a treat that the dog really likes, then let it sniff the treat and put it on the ground with your hand still on it. the dog will lick it and try to eat it and eventually it will lay down.

Cows can be socialized to humans but the relative success and the time it will take hinges on age and the cow's past experience with humans.

Hand raised babies that are handled a lot will be the easiest followed by weanlings. Older cattle that are fearful or suspicious of people need gentle treatment and exposure to humans working near and around them without attempting to work WITH them.

Since your experience with cattle is limited find an experienced handler to help you and always keep your personal safety in mind. Remember that livestock must be taught to respect your personal space as a disrespectful, friendly animal can be more dangerous than a fearful one.

With either a tranquilizer dart, a anaesthetic administered by a vet, or by a rope trick as follows: Loop a single strand of rope loosely around the base of her neck with a non-slip knot in front of the shoulders. Use a half-hitch around her body beind the elbows and a second half-hitch in front of the udder. She is then put down on the ground by pulling on the free end of the rope behind her, putting pressure on nerves and blood vessels that supply the legs which makes her collapse.

You need to train the horse to do this. Start by picking up the front hoof like your going to clean it and while holding the hoof slowly and gently pull on the lead rope so the horses head bends down to the ground. Your horses body will follow into a bowing position, once to that point and while in the bow turn the horses head to the side the same was as you pulled down into the bow and the horse will lay down. This could take months of training every day so be patient

You will have to have treats with you. The dog will see it so direct the treat to the floor and it will lay. After a while you will need to say lay or down while the dog is going down.

Do you tell a dog to lay down or to lie down?

Yes dogs do lay down but you have to teach them to. It is a long process but if you work at it you can acomplich a smart dog. First you say sit. Do not scream but say in a stern voice. Then push them down to the ground until in a laying position. Try not to hurt them but do conrtol them. Please do not kick or hit your or someone else's dog. It can really hurt the dog. You reapeat this process about six or seven times a day until they do it on their own. Also when they lay down by themselves give them a treat or pet them. If you want to you can also give them a treat or pet them when you push them down and they stay down. Good luck on training your dog!
