How do you get the hood up if the hood release cable is broken?

You're going to have to pull the latch manually. The best bet is to go through the grille with a special tool or fabricate one out of heavy wire. The cable connects to the driver's side of the latch and pulls it open from there.

I had this problem recently with a 93 grand v. after the hood release handle broke and the way the mechanic opened the hood was taking the grill out - just unscrewed 2 screws - and with the same screwdriver pushed the latch. Hope it is as easy on a 95. Now I carry a pair of pliers to pull the cable from the inside until I find a new handle. If you know where to get one let me know.

∙ 16y agoIF the Cable is broken on the hood latch, I used a long, flat head screwdriver. Locate the eyelet under the hood, and push it with the screwdriver. It's difficult, but it works. Replace the hood latch before you close the hood. Good zluck.

∙ 17y agoyou can usually open hood latch with a long screwdriver by going thru front grill, and pushing with end of screwdriver on the latch where the cable attaches. failing that, go to local fire dept. they have a special tool for opening hoods that will not do damage to vehicle but will get it open

∙ 9y agoOften you can remove the grill and access the release, on chevys I have poked around with a hook tool and been succesful. every vehicle is different
You may also access the inner strand of wire at the pull handle if this is where it broke. I pulled on my opener and the handle just came out. I could tell that it broke right at the handle. You will probably be replacing the cable after you get your hood open so it won't hurt to remove the Kick panel ( mine had an 11mm nut recessed in the rear of the panel and 1 philips screw shared with the mud guard along the bottem of the door). Remove the cable mounting screws (3 allen head), 2 on the main pull bracket and 1 more on the cable bracket 6 inches toward the firewall. Once the cable is free you may see the silver strand of wire sticking out just enough to grab with vice grips and pull, if not you can strip the end of the shielding and get to the strand.

∙ 8y agoWhere is the cable broken? They usually break at the handle so just use pliers to pull the cable end sticking out. May help to have someone push down a little on the hood if the latch is dry and sticking. That's usually why they break.

∙ 18y agoYou may pull the wire with a pair of plyers near the hood latch. To access it you need to reach behind the grille of the car and pull the exposed wire near the latch with the plyers
