you can change it firstly once the swelling has gone down, because your are pierced with a large bar/hoop to allow swelling, that's when you can put different bars retainers and so on. i should know i work at a piercing shop :)

A small clamp-like thing is put onto your lip to get the position, sometime this isn't used, then a needle is pushed though.

ok, no any normal needle is used. professionals and other people that do piercings use a hollow needle so that the skin won't wrap itself around the jewelry.

Apply anti-scar gel or cream on the piercing several times a day to get rid of the scar. It may take weeks or months for the mark to fade. If that does not work, you can take help from plastic surgeon.

To change mine i simply bit onto the back and twist the ball off and then repeat is reverse to re-apply.
