Coughing does not have to be contagious (catching). Coughing is a reflex to an irritant in the bronchial tubes, causing spasms. There are many causes for coughing, however, most causes of a cough are not contagious.

Those coughs which can be contagious are -- viral colds, viral bronchitis, viral pneumonia, Pertussis (Whopping Cough), Influenza, Respiratory Syncytial Virus, and Tuberculosis.

If a person has a congested cough due to a bacteria, germ or virus their cough is contagious to others. If the congested cough is due to congestive heart failure, some Allergies and perhaps a congenital disease such as cystic fibrosis or perhaps COPD type problems. However if the person with the "self contained" lung disease is coughing and has contracted a germ, bacteria or virus he becomes contagious.

It is best to practice covering your mouth and nose when around someone coughing and to politely request they do the same. Wash your hands when around him and after being around him or her. If a person has come into your house coughing spray some Lysol and clean areas the person touched.

That is the primary way of catching it. I am not sure of the exact transport mechanism, but in order to get croup there has to be someone else that gives it to you.
