Very simply, it is a lawsuit that seeks money in return for the wrong the defendant is alleged to have done. The most common example is a car accident case where the plaintiff seeks a money judgment for pain and suffering and reimbursement of medical expenses. This type of lawsuit asks the court to make the defendant do something he/she was obligated to do, or set aside a will, or oder a property partitioned and other types of things other than just giving money.
