Alot of people have heart burn and think it is acid reflux but it really is just an imbalance of stomach acid. Taking a probiotic with bifidus culture can prevent reoccuring indegestion. Another way to battle heart burn is by eating natural yogurt. You need to regulate your digestive system not cause an imbalance in your stomach acid which causes more heart burn.

Decreasing caffeine intake, eating smaller lower fat meals, weight loss, avoiding spicy foods, avoiding alcohol, avoiding acidic foods such as tomato sauce/citrus and Carbonated Beverages, avoiding NSAIDs (aspirin, Motrin/Advil (ibuprofen), Aleve) avoiding going to bed with food in your stomach and raising the head of your bed can all help.

As far as medications go antacids such as Tums, Maalox or Pepto Bismol or even plain old baking soda and water are the best for fast but short term relief of occasional symptoms.

For more frequent or prolonged symptoms most people do well with over the counter Zantac (ranitidine), Pepcid (famotidine) or Tagament (cimetidine) although cimetidine has a lot of drug interactions and so should probably be avoided by people taking a lot of medications. Pepcid Complete is a favorite of mine for combining the immediate relief of the antacid with the longer relief of the Pepcid.

People not responding to the above can "step up" to proton pump inhibitors such as Prilosec (omeprazole), Prevacid (lansoprazole) or Protonix (pantoprazole). These medications are stonger for most people (but not everyone) but cause more of a rebound effect and so can be harder to stop once started.

If you are having significant abdominal pain, weight loss, difficulty swallowing, pain waking you up at night, blood in the stool or big black tarry stools or if the symptoms continue for more than 2 weeks you should see your doctor.

How do you get Acid Reflux (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD)

Acid reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (muscular valve) doesn't properly close allowing acid from the stomach to reflux back up the esophagus which can cause burning of the esophageal lining.

Acid reflux is a burning sensation usually in the chest area just behind the breast bone. Acid reflux is often more painful when bending over or lying down.

It is not something to be concerned about if you have heartburn occasionally. It can be treated easily with over-the-counter medications and making some lifestyle changes.

Here Are Some Medical Conditions That Can Increase The Chance Of Having Acid Reflux:

Hiatal Hernia

Diabetes

Autoimmune diseases, such as Crest syndrome, scleroderma and Raynaud phenomenon.

Some Prescription Medications Can Interfere With The Lower Esophageal Sphincter Function, These Include:

Certain blood pressure medications.

Some heart medications.

The Asthma drug, theophylline.

Some osteoporosis medications.

Aspirin and ibuprofen.

Heartburn that occurs more frequently and interferes with your daily routine may be a symptom that is more serious. It's a good idea to see your doctor and discuss your symptoms.

If you don't want a stomach operation, then let's look at the causes.

Surprisingly, the kidneys' large pours' size is responsible for too much small ion loss, such as sodium, which can neutralize acid. Larger ions such as chloride remain in the net, to be recirculated (=recycled) back in the blood, back to the stomach's acid producing (=collecting) gland. Shrinking the kidney's pour sizes would be a step in the right direction to curing acid reflux, and prevent small ion losses.

Unfortunately the problem with getting older, is growing up, so that proportionally everything gets bigger including the kidney pours. High blood pressure also forces large ions to rip & burst thru the pours (causing the permanent damage of making the holes (=pours) larger). Not eating, such as fasting causes a slight shrinking of the body due to dehydration mainly. But the number one cause of excess stomach acid is too much salt (NaCl) eaten. Without chloride, stomach acid (HCl) can NOT be made.

A no salt diet is recommended, but tastes dull in the beginning, & too many foods are salted already, if not heavily. Salt substitute, Mono-sodium glutamate (taste enhancer), has no chloride, but will make the short term memory forgetful because it is similar to a brain substance, but not the same. Other than that, it's harmless, but please remember, if you haven't already forgotten, that, that memory can be (very) important (sometimes)! Most doctors don't know all that (above). They've "guessed" things work differently, & have been battling with the problem with other methods, rarely touching the real causes. Food nowadays is too salty.

Try taking an over the counter stomach remedy such as Zantac or Diovol. Read the labels to be sure these remedies are right for you. There are certain foods that have a tendency to cause acid reflux such as coffee, chocolate, colas and alcohol. You can try to avoid consuming these foods and see if their absence helps or not.

Well first of all you DO NOT want it. You can be born with it or get it by over stuffing your self. I am a sufferer. I take 2 tums before i eat and 2 after i eat. Sometimes they don't work so i get a over-the-counter medication that helps soothe it and i take to swallows of it BTW its mint yummy! anyway with me some food like spaghetti sauce from pizza hut with their spaghetti , types of Pizza, apples, mostly spicey foods i stay away from but i gotta have tacos you know lol but only sometimes they hurt me . How i got it. acid reflux is a disease and it is really pain full . You have a cover almost like a cap over the opening of your stomach and when you swallow it opens . When you eat acid is in your stomach to digest and when you eat too much guess what, that acid has digested all of it and that acid has caused a problem in your stomach with the cover. Now when you eat you have to be careful because now your lid doesn't close all the way and it causes ruins acid smelling burps and stomach pain . I hope i helped you
