Lupus is an autoimmune disease that has both a genetic and environmental component. Researchers think that the ability to get lupus is found mainly in the genes. Having the genetic capacity to get lupus doesn't mean you will however. It requires a trigger - usually an environmental issue such as free radicals from sunlight, insufficient vitamin D, illness and infection or other triggers. The genes are the gun, but something else must pull the trigger. Lupus is not a contagious disease.
Lupus is a chronic, inflammatory, autoimmune disease. The cause is not known and there is no cure. However, scientists know that a person has to have a genetic predisposition and then be exposed to triggers. Some genes have been identified, but more need to be identified. Known triggers are cigarette smoke, UVA and UVB light and stress. Lupus is not cancer. Lupus is not contagious. Lupus is not HIV/AIDS. In lupus the immune system cannot tell the difference between normal healthy tissue and invaders like viruses, germs or parasites. The immune system attacks healthy organs causing pain and damage. Lupus develops in people who are genetically predisposed to the disease and who are exposed to triggers-some are known and others are suspected. You can't do anything about your genetic predisposition. Epstein-Barr virus, cigarette smoke and sunlight are known triggers. Stress makes lupus flare once you have already developed the disease. It has lately been found that sun exposure has no bearing on triggering lupus in some patients, normally ones with olive complexions or sometimes those who never got sunburned previously in their lives. Nothing can be done to prevent lupus. Very healthy, vibrant people who are in great physical shape and who are well-adjusted and in excellent mental health, those who exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet, do not smoke or do illegal drugs, and drink alcohol only socially in moderation are just as likely to get it as someone in poor health. There is nothing scientifically known or proven that you can do to prevent getting lupus. It randomly strikes people of all ages, races, genders, socioeconomic backgrounds, and varying stages of physical and mental health and well-being. More effort has been put into lupus awareness lately so that it can get more funding to research what causes this cruel and debilitating disease.

You get lupus when your immune system fires a constant attack against a toxin in your tissues that cannot die. Your body then gets stuck in a Th1 or Th2 dominance.
