The prion that causes bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, the scientific name for mad cow disease) is very resistent to degradation. The two methods to destroy the prion are by incineration and by alkaline hydrolysis.

There is no virus named 'mad cow'. Mad Cow Disease (Bovine spongiform encephalopathy) does NOT spread from a virus!!! Nor it spreads from a bacterium, fungus or parasite. It spreads from a protein that comes in a form that is far tinier than the tiniest viral organism. It can be spread in feed that has animal byproducts in it containing some form of ruminal protein (called prion protein, from other ruminants including sheep or cows), or through some other vector.

Mad Cow Disease is a neurodegenerative disease. It causes a spongy degeneration of the brain and spinal cord. The brain becomes spongy with holes and slowly wastes away. The diseased cattle become violent with the signs of mental disorder and have difficulty in movement.

Prion protein has an incubation period of about 4 to 5 years, which is long enough to infect many cattle if not treated. Cattle that are 4 to 5 years old can get the disease very easily.

How does the virus of mad cow get its energy?

Mad Cow Disease or Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy is NOT caused by a virus, it is a PRION, which is a mis-folded protein.

Which of these causes mad cow disease?

prion

What is the pathogen that causes Mad Cow Disease?

A prion, or misfolded protein caused by genetic mutation.

What is the scientific name of the pathogen that causes mad cow disease?

A prion.

infectious proteins called prions

What type of beast has Mad Cow Disease?

Cows.

Is mad cow diasese a virus?

Mad cow disease is scientifically known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE for short. BSE is caused by a mis-folded protein in the brain and spinal cord of cattle, so it is actually none of the above (virus, bacteria or protist). Prions are a novel form of disease infection distinct from the traditional three infectious routes identified in the early 1900s.

Which season do people usually start getting mad cow disease?

Mad Cow is not a virus or bacterial infection like a cold or flu is that comes about as a seasonal thing. It is caused by a prion, and the chances that humans will contract Mad Cow is extremely low; there is no season that people can "start getting" Mad Cow disease.

What is cow disease?

There is no such thing as "cow disease" unless you are referring to MAD cow disease, which is something else entirely.

What is sad cow disease?

It's not sad cow disease, it's MAD cow disease. Its a brain disease that can cause irrational behavior in cows.

What microbe is involved with mad cow disease?

No microbe is involved with BSE. BSE is caused by a prion, or a misfolded protein, not a protozoa, bacteria, virus, or any other one-celled animal that causes illness in multi-cellular animals like cattle.

What is a protein that can cause infection or disease?

Prions can cause an infection. They are simple proteins that can replicate under the right circumstances and one of them causes Mad Cow disease.
