Most scabies are contracted by close personal contact with another human, but bedding can also be a vector, usually in hospitals and elder care facilities. Scabies will not live long if not on a warm host.

Can scabies live on things other than the skin?
No, because it is a skin disease. They can live for a few hours in bedding etc, but will soon die if they can't find some skin.
Why would someone need their legs amputated?
Some sort of disease might have infected it, such as cancer, and you amputate it to stop it from spreading. Terry Fox had cancer in his leg and he had it amputated to stop it from spreading. Or maybe you got in some sort of accident and sometimes amputation is better than dragging a destroyed leg.
