The alternator is on the bottom-right of the engine. Jack up the right side of the car (chalk your wheels, ensure the transmission is in park, and the parking brake is set). Loosen the locknut on the alternator. Back off the tension on the belt with the tension bolt. Remove the belt and all wires attached to the unit. Remove the alternator bolt and unit.
Answeri do know on early 90's was over passenger side tire Now here's an update to the answer above from another user:If it is the 22R series 4 cylinder engine, Toyota has it on the driver's side. I had to replace an alternator bracket on an 82 Toyota - the salvage yard sold me an improved version off a 1992 Toyota truck. So this information is also good for those who have trucks from 1981-95 with the 22R series 4 cylinder engines.
you need a 8mm and a 6mm hex wrench and maybe a 10mm 13mm and 15mm sockets. First release the tension bar from the alternator and then use the 6mm hex on the inside end of the alternator and the 8mm on the other side...spin opposite directions and the alternator should come out.,
